The Story of Our Solar System

The presentation is a comprehensive exploration of how our planetary system formed, evolved, and continues to change. The physical properties of the planets and moons, the processes that shaped their birth, and the forces that have driven their long-term evolution are explored. Central to the discussion is the Nebular Theory of Formation, presented alongside more recent insights gained from the discovery and study of planetary systems around other stars. By comparing our Solar System with these “exoplanetary” systems, we gain a deeper understanding of what makes our cosmic neighborhood both typical and unique. Throughout the talk, the methods of science—observation, modeling, and theory—are highlighted as powerful tools for uncovering the history of our fascinating Solar System.

Joe DalSanto

The speaker is Professor Joe DalSanto. Joe has been fascinated by astronomy for as long as he can remember and has spent hundreds of nights under the stars observing with telescopes ranging from small amateur instruments to the historic Yerkes 40-inch refractor. He began teaching astronomy in 2007 at Waubonsee Community College and joined the College of DuPage in 2012, where he revamped the astronomy curriculum by developing new courses and authoring new instructional materials. He has served as Chair of the Earth Science Department for seven years and is currently in his fourth year as STEM Division Chair. Joe is passionate about sharing the wonders of astronomy with students and audiences of all ages and experience levels.
