Observation of nanoHertz Gravitational Waves
Presenter: Dr. Paul Bloom, Associate Professor of Physics, North Central College
Gravitational waves were first observed in 2017 by the LIGO experimental collaboration. Now physicists have identified another source of gravitational waves with frequencies in the nanoHertz range. The discovery resulted from the long term observation of millisecond-period pulsars for more than a decade, and has opened the door to a new range of phenomena. In this talk, Dr Bloom will discuss the basics of gravitational waves, the use of pulsar timing arrays to measure them, what was actually observed, and what it all might mean.
The public is welcome to attend, free of charge.
