Shooting Stars: Understanding and Observing Meteors
Presenter: Drew Carhart
Many things that amateur astronomers view in the heavens are, on our time scale, permanent; planets, stars, galaxies, etc. But one set of celestial objects are extremely ephemeral, lasting often less than a second. What origins and nature of meteors? How are they related to comets — another celestial object seen to move across the sky? And how can we get our best views of “shooting” or “falling stars”? Club president Drew Carhart has always considered meteors to be one of his favorite celestial phenomena, and has spent many nights over the past half century or so out watching for them. (Including an impromptu trip to southern Florida just last week to view the Alpha Monocerotid shower); he will share with us his fascination with these brief cosmic visitors.
The public is welcome to attend, free of charge.
