The South Pole Telescope
Presenter: Donna Kubik, Fermilab Center for Particle Astrophysics
The South Pole Telescope, a 10 meter diameter microwave and sub millimeter-wave instrument, was built in 2006 and 2007, and began operation in 2007. Since then, it has undergone several upgrades. It makes use of the polar region’s optimal conditions for observing in millimeter wavelengths, and has been employed in a number of research projects, including studying the cosmic microwave background and searching for extremely distant galaxies. Donna will fill us in on some of the exciting discoveries that this little-known instrument has played a part in!
The public is welcome to attend, free of charge.
