Lunar Eclipse at Greene Valley

Canceled Public

Join us on the hill at Greene Valley Forest Preserve for the first total eclipse of the Moon since 2019. The entry gate will be open from 8 to 11 pm and you can stay as long as you like through the end of the eclipse at 1 am. Bring binoculars (or your own telescope) to see the Chinese space station Tiangong cut across a corner of the full Moon at 8:52 pm, and to see the fully-eclipsed Moon snuff out a double star at 10:45 pm. Watch the Moon’s color change during the eclipse naked-eye, in binoculars, or through our telescopes. The partial eclipse begins at 9:28 pm and ends at 12:56 am, and the total eclipse lasts from 10:29 to 11:54 pm. During totality, compare the color of the eclipsed Moon to nearby red star Antares. Binoculars are not necessary, but are recommended if you have them, and we’ll have a few pairs to lend out at the event.

This event is open to the public and free of charge.
