"Sunrise" Lunar Eclipse Observing
There is a total eclipse of the Moon around dawn on Jan 31st; what makes this one particularly interesting is the possibility that it will be a rare “selenelion” for us — a chance to see the fully eclipsed Moon above the western horizon as the Sun comes over the eastern one. In theory, since the eclipsed Moon has to be completely opposite the Sun, they can’t both appear in the sky at the same time, but Earth’s atmosphere lets us actually see a bit below the horizon.
Dress warmly, and come join us! Total eclipse starts at about 10 ’til 7am, and the Moon sets about 20 minutes later, with sunrise in between. You don’t need a telescope to see the event, but the altitude of the hill at Greene Valley F.P. should help us get a good view of the horizons.
This event is open to the public and free of charge.
