What Do "Yellowballs" Have to Do with the Birth of Stars?

Presenter: Grace Wolf-Chase, Ph.D.

“Yellowballs” were named by citizen scientists who identified them by their appearance in infrared images used in the Milky Way Project, one of the many people-powered research projects launched on the Zooniverse platform. YBs are links between the cold interstellar clouds that form stars and the types of stars that form. Dr. Wolf-Chase, a Senior Scientist and Senior Education & Communication Specialist with the Planetary Science Institute, will tell us how she and her colleagues are using a catalog of over 6,000 YBs across the Milky Way to examine the conditions under which different stars form, and will showcase an activity that enables students in introductory astronomy classes to participate in this research while learning fundamental concepts in astronomy.

The public is welcome to attend, free of charge.
