An Abundance of Magnetized Radio Filaments in the Center of the Milky Way Galaxy
Presenter: Dr. Farhad Yusef-Zadeh
Recent South African MeerKAT observations of the Galactic center have identified hundreds of magnetized radio filaments in the inner 1000 light years of the Galactic center. The morphology of these filaments appears harp-like, fragmented cometary tail-like, or loop-like structures.
In this talk, after a brief history of the VLA discovery of radio filaments from the 1980’s, Dr. Zadeh will review the evidence for a population of magnetized filaments and discuss their structural details and origin, related to a relic of activity from a few million years ago.
Dr. Zadeh has been a professor of Physics and Astronomy at Northwestern University for decades. His main research interest is the nucleus of the Milky Way Galaxy.
The public is welcome to attend, free of charge.
