Finding the First Stars with the James Webb Space Telescope
Presenter: Brian Welch
Location: Streamed online.
Brian will present an overview of the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope, including a discussion of the calibration process and an update on how far along that process is. He will also discuss a few of the planned Cycle 1 observations that will be carried out with the telescope, including observations of the lensed star Earendel, seen 900 million years after the Big Bang, and searches for additional stars at Cosmic Dawn. These observations will shed new light on the first galaxies and the first stars to form in the universe.
Brian got his college degree at the University of Chicago and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in astronomy and astrophysics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He will shortly start his new job as an astrophysicist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
This event is open to the public and free of charge.
