Versatility of CCDs
Presenter: Donna Kubik
Location: Fermilab, Wilson Hall, room One West.
NOTE THE DIFFERENT LOCATION
The scientific expertise and facilities developed at Fermilab for high energy physics detectors were just right for building the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), the 570 megapixel optical imager installed on the Blanco Telescope in Chile for the Dark Energy Survey (DES). The camera is comprised of an array of CCDs, designed and fabricated by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, packaged and fully-characterized at Fermilab. The camera has been very successful, accumulating data for DES for more than 6 years.
But that’s just the beginning of the story. Since then, these CCDs have been adapted for use as dark matter detectors, neutrino detectors, and in spectrometers located across USA as well as in far corners of the world, in Brazil, Chile, Canada, and, soon, in space, aboard a CubeSat.
Donna will address the questions: What makes these CCDs so versatile? What comes next?
You can enter the Fermilab site either through the Batavia Road entrance in Warrenville or the Pine Street entrance in Batavia.
Please bring a photo ID, show it to the security guard at the site entrance and state the purpose of your visit. There is free parking available in the lots next to Wilson Hall. If you enter Wilson Hall on the ground floor level, take the elevator to the first floor (atrium level).
This event is open to the public and free of charge.
